Windows Phone Devices Battle it Out in Dogfight

New smartphones have been boring lately and new iterations of the iPhone have been rather blasé.  Windows Phone intends to change that and there are two recent additions to the Microsoft smartphone family that we are really impressed with (and many of us at IdentityMine actually use). The two phones I’m talking about are the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II; both of which are comparable devices.

Phonedog (a website that compares and ranks smartphones) helped everyone out by starting the Dog Fight series that pits two phones against each other. Both smartphones are ready to take on the tasks of any smartphone power user and the phones offer strong CPU power and healthy sized touch displays.

Solutions for On-the-Go Windows Phone Users

Do you ever feel like you need more time in the day to get everything done? If you have this problem, you may be a very busy person or you may just not be managing your time well. I’m a major proponent for using calendars and sticky notes on computers and smartphones.  I’m also able to sync and set alarms for important dates and notes on a mobile device that’s always on my side. However, sometimes I feel that I have so many notes and important dates that they get lost in my calendar application.

There is a pretty slick new app on the Windows Phone Marketplace that allows you to replace the standard calendar tile with a tile that maximizes the limited space on your start screen. AppoinTile displays up to 4 upcoming appointments, calendar, and the days date which brings everything you need into one optimized tile.

Let’s Take a Look at What You Get

  • Live tiles showing up to 4 upcoming appointments
  • 42-day dynamic calendar with markers on days having activity
  • Summary count of the appointments you have today
  • Automatic syncing with your phone calendar
  • Customizable layout both for front and back of tiles
  • Appointments filtering/hiding

The most recent update supports any calendar, including Exchange and Office 365, and allows offline syncing. In all, this app really gets down to business and is sure to offer a one stop shop for the person on the go.

Microsoft’s “Tulalip” Social Network

A little while back, Microsoft launched a landing page to a social network called Tulalip.  Little is known as to why the site was “leaked” before it was ready to launch; maybe an IT error or possibly intentional to create internet buzz (working). The name choice of Microsoft’s social network would not be obvious unless you are a native of Washington; Tulalip is a Native American tribe that was located close to Redmond (Microsoft’s home base). The tech giant bought the domain Socl.com, which will soon serve as the newest hotspot for social searching. The website’s tag line, “With Tulalip you can Find what you need and Share what you know easier than ever,” leads me to believe that Bing will be heavily integrated into Microsoft’s social network. What about those Facebook and Twitter “sign in” fields? Microsoft does not seem to be positioning itself to go head to head with the two largest social networks; a light personal experience with an emphasis on Finding and Sharing can be expected (which is where Bing will come in handy).

Not much else is known about Microsoft’s social network, but you can expect us to share the details as soon as more information is revealed.

What do you all think about Microsoft jumping into the social scene?

Blending the Lines – Smartphones and Watches

Many people, including me, ditched their watches in favor of their smartphones in order to worry about one less thing to remember before running to work. Today, I stumbled across a new smartwatch that emulates the user interface of Android-based smartphones. Milan-based Blue Sky created the first “smartwatch” named the i’m Watch which sports many of the basic functions of a smartphone including calls, text messages, email, music, photos, videos and the Internet. The smartwatch looks like it may have been based off the iPod Nano watch created on KickStarter. Since the watch is an Italian product, it is a little unclear as to whether or not it works is the US, although I am sure we will learn more as the watch is set to be displayed at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. If these are able to sync up with US based phones you can expect a full review. If you wish to purchase this awesome smartwatch, be prepared to spend a fair chunk of change for the Tech version which will run EUR 499 (unless you purchase the base model EUR 249).
