New Tablets Coming to the Market – Nokia Wants In

Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, has been the center of attention of Microsoft and Windows Phone bloggers since the launch of the Nokia’s Lumia 710 and 800 Windows Phone handsets. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Stephen made a few remarks regarding Nokia’s plans to jump into the tablet market. “There’s a new tablet opportunity coming,” he said. “We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics” of the tablet market.

So far, Nokia has been quite successful with the launch of the Lumia 800 handset (Running Windows Phone Mango OS), gaining praise from many consumer electronics websites. If this former cell phone titan stays on track and delivers another unique product, they could position themselves as a tablet contender. Although Stephen did not give a concrete answer as to what Operating System the tablets would run on, he did mention that “The user experience of Windows 8 is essentially a supercharged version of the Nokia Lumia experience that you saw on stage today. And you see the parallels and opportunity for commonality from a user perspective.” This may be the only hint we need to bet that Nokia will power their tablets with Windows 8 (Read our blog about Windows 8 tablets here).

Hopefully we will hear more from Stephen about Nokia’s plan for their tablets, and I’m sure he will have a more concrete answer about the Operating System after the holidays.

Microsoft’s Vision of the Future

Microsoft’s video displays how they imagine the world will use their technology; mobile devices and digital displays are fully integrated into every facet of our lives. This is the direction IdentityMine has been moving towards over the past few years as we have heavily invested in gesture, touch screen, digital displays, and mobile technology – getting everything to work synonymously is the challenge. Microsoft has been hard at work trying to bring everything in the video to life, though this will not be for a long time, it is still compelling to see technologies we have invested in as the center of Microsoft’s attention.

GDR UK – A Global Innovation Report

A few weeks ago, GDR UK, a trend analysis and forecasting consultancy, published a Global Innovation Report highlighting our Cross Channel Retail Experience (featured in our blog). “Every report delivers a relevant and striking visual narrative of emerging trends impacting key customer touch-points, including: interiors, marketing, digital, new technologies, visual merchandising, packaging, product and service design.”

Since this report, we have been working on a new version that is sure to get the attention of major retailers. Our newest update to the Cross Channel Retail Experience includes an updated User Interface (UI) for the Surface 2, an interactive touchscreen station, that includes MS-Tagging for consumers to share reviews and compare products, as well as purchase the products with their mobile device.

Nokia’s New Bendy Prototype Presented at Nokia World

Nokia World is over and we are beginning to wrap our heads around what is to come of all the great new Nokia/Windows phones announced this week. Everything I saw was rather compelling; great looking phones, decent processing power, everything is now running mango – whats not to like? These are all phones we can get our hands on, but what about the new Nokia prototype we can’t get our hands on?

This new bendable prototype has been turning heads, and for a good reason. The way this new hand held form factor bends, you will have to twist and turn your head to view the screen.

Here’s how it works: Twist to cycle through photos and music files. Flex inward or outward to zoom into photos, or pause and play music.

Nokia has come out with one of the coolest new prototypes I’ve seen in a while, though we may never see it reach consumer production. I see no real-world applicable use for this new form factor, except for the screen that seems to be indestructible -I would have loved to have had those screens on the first three smartphones I owned… Lets take a look at the demo of Nokia’s prototype shall we?

Nokia World – Day 1 Update

Stephen Elop announced that the Nokia smartphones running Microsoft’s Mango OS will be the Lumia 800/710 will be launching today in the UK, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. These are the first of their kind running on the Windows Phone platform. The camera on the phones include a Carl Zeiss lens – we expect nothing less from a European phone manufacturer. The internals of these phones boast a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.4 GHz single core processor, which seem to be on the weaker end of the spectrum when it compared to other phones rolling out later this year. Protecting the 3.9in OLED WVGA display is a sheet of Gorilla Glass – no more cracked screens ruining your touch capability. The Lumia 800/710 include navigation features called Nokia Drive; a voice guided navigation system with a UI very similar to an in car nav system. As far as music goes, the phones sport Nokia’s Mix Radio – mixes can be downloaded to the phone at no charge.

Overall, these phones seem very promising, but now only time will tell how this Nokia/Microsoft partnership will play out.

On a side note, look for people running around major cities / launch markets in “tile” costumes… it’s a part of their marketing strategy.
